The word “interesting” fits the plot pretty well, as the story is intellectually cool to read, but it isn’t particularly exciting or emotionally moving. It subverts a lot of expectations in the beginning of the story (it helped that I came into it completely blind and had no idea what would happen) and garnered a lot of good will because of that. I found Maoyuu to be very different and interesting, especially due to the economic focus to the story that reminds me so much of Spice and Wolf. Finally, the light novel was adapted into the manga that I’ve read and am discussing here. After that, it was adapted into a light novel and an anime. Originally, Maoyuu was posted as a short story on the Japanese text message board “2channel”, where it was written in the style of a play (with only dialogue). Instead, each of the characters is referred to by their title, be it “Hero”, “Demon King/Lord” or “Young Merchant”.Įven the origins of the Maoyuu story are unusual. In addition to the unusual plot, the characters in Maoyuu do not have given names. Among the strategies they employ are the introduction of new crops and farming techniques, the support for education, and enlisting the help of powerful merchants and traders.Īs you may be able to tell, the story that Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (Literally “Demon King and Hero”) is trying to convey is a very unusual one. They travel across the land and begin a multi-year plan to bring the frontier lands up to snuff for the incoming end of the war, helping people they meet along the way. He agrees to join the Demon Lord and together they head off to use the power of science and economics to save the human world. Although he hesitates initially, the hero understands that the Demon Lord’s solution is probably the best one for minimizing the suffering of the human world. When the Demon Lord explains that she plans to work to prepare the human world for the end of the war she also asks to enlist the hero’s help. The hero is moved by her words and in his travels he’s seen many of the issues that she describes. On top of that, the human world has been united by the war with the demon world, and an end to the fighting would bring about renewed internal conflicts and strife. The economy of the human world subsists on the transfer of food and goods to the front lines, and based on her (The Demon Lord’s) calculations, a swift end to the war will bring about untold suffering and starvation. She explains to the hero that the war between the two worlds has dramatically altered the economy of the human world, with the battered frontier lands no longer producing food or goods (but instead serving as the battlefield) while the inner lands produce all the food and house most of the nobles. Upon confronting the Demon Lord, he learns not only that she’s a woman, but that she wants the hero to join her. Its there that the story takes its major turn.

Our hero is gifted with incredible power and skill, and he easily has made his way to the final boss, the demon lord, by the start of the first chapter. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is an unconventional tale of a hero that sets out to defeat the lord of demons and end a long war between the human and demon worlds. Genre/Elements: Seinen, Romance?, Fantasy, Economics An educational change of pace from your standard fantasy hero story. TL DR Impression: An economics and science focused story that tends to be more intellectual than exciting. Where normally you would have epic fantasy battles you instead have the introduction of new farming techniques and discussions on human nature. Demon King: “Become mine, Hero!” Hero: “I refuse!”
